A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes

I've always been a planner. I like to prepare and to know what's coming up next and I find comfort in routine and what's known. I'm sure I could break down the psychology of why I'm this way, it doesn't really matter. I've come to realize that as much as I can plan and prepare and make myself comfortable, in all things, life throws a curveball.

My senior year of high school, I remember sitting in my counselors office talking to her about where to go next. I had the world at my feet and I was overwhelmed. This is something I've learned about myself: too many options freak me out. I was talking with her about if I should go to a university or start at a community college. She kept telling me that I needed to take risks, to pick the choice that scares me the most. Feeling pressured and scared, I went against her advice and enrolled at my local community college. Now don't get me wrong. I absolutely do not regret my decision at all. Not only did I finish my first three years of schooling debt free thanks to my wonderful mother and grandparents, I was able to travel, spend time with family and work at jobs I loved. But I often look back at that choice and think about how my life would be different had I made a different decision.

This summer, my good friend Alli had come home from college, excited because she had been accepted an internship at Disney World but she didn't know if she was going to take it because her friend hadn't gotten in. Jokingly one night, we talked about what would happen if we both got in and were able to spend a couple months in the happiest place on earth together. I had heard and seen that the program was extremely hard to get into, so when I randomly decided to apply one day, I never thought anything would come out of it. Flash forward to the day I was talking on the phone for an interview and even more forward to the day I got the email in my inbox saying “Congratulations, You've been selected to participate in the Disney College Program!” I was shocked. I honestly couldn't believe it. Of course, my initial instinct was to hide and pretend it never happened. And what's sad was that I was seriously considering doing that! But after chatting with my grandparents, my lovely grandmother gave me the best advice. "Be brave, Amber."

For the first time in my life, I made a choice that entails jumping head first into the unknown. What an extraordinary, frightfully amazing moment it was to click accept and for WALT DISNEY WORLD (!!!) to be my future home for the next 5 months. I cannot wait to start this new journey and while the anxiety of the unknown does get to me a lot, I just remind myself that this is the time of my life and there will be no regrets in doing it, the regrets would only lie in not going. Finally, I'm at a point in my life where plans don't matter, I don't know what's next or the outcome or even the 'right' way to get there. But here I am, Nana, I'm being brave.

So how long are you going to be there?!
I will be there from January 26th - May!

Hey, Amber...so are you, like, going to be a princess?
Surprisingly, this is the question I get the most. Honestly I have no clue why, as I'm 5'1 and way too chubby to resemble any of them. (Hey maybe I should've tried out for Ursula!! hahaha) Sadly, no I won't. You have to audition for any character roles and they are extremely picky to say the least. 

But I thought you said you're going to be a Cast Member?
That's just what Disney calls all their employees.

Well, what are you going to be doing then?
My official title is the role of Recreation. It's a pretty broad term that can have a variety of different jobs. I will find out my specific job when I check in. If you're curious, my friend who is doing it with me will be a lifeguard.

 Do you get paid? Do you get college credit?
Yes, it is a paid internship and yes, Disney does offer classes that are accredited. My university won't accept them for my major so if you're interested in doing it, talk with your advisor to be sure. I'm just switching my summer break to be from jan-may instead of may-august, so technically I'm not missing any school.

So do you actually live in the Castle?
No, but wouldn't that be amazing! They own and provide exclusive apartment complexes for all the interns to live.

Can I come visit you!?
YES! I would love that!

Sooooo.....Are you going to be blogging?

This is where it gets tough. Let's just get the elephant out of the room and say that for the last couple months, as you guys have noticed, I've been in a bit of a blogging funk. I want to be honest and say that I kind of just feel like I've outgrown this blog. Part of that makes me sad as I've genuinely found joy in writing about my life and I love reading my old posts and what was going on in my life for over three years. I've also met so many amazing readers and fellow bloggers which makes me sad to have to say goodbye.

But who knows, I might just pick it back up once I get there...someone even suggested making a Disney blog! I never say never and I think that maybe once I get there, my opinion may change. As for now, this will be my last post.

Currently Obsessed

So I've been a bad blogger, but I wanted to share a few things I've currently been obsessed with, sound good?

1. This EOS Holiday Three-Pack

I already love these lip balms and when I ran into Ulta for something and saw them, I bought them on a whim. The flavors are so amazing, probably my favorites out of all of the ones I already owned.

Flavors include:

• Aloha Hawaii Strawberry Kiwi
• St Barth's Sunrise Pink Grapefruit
• Indian Summer Orange Blossom

If you have an addiction to lip balm like I do, you need these!

2. Netflix.

I used to have it a long time ago, but canceled. Now I have it again and I can't stop watching. Right now I've been loving Orange is the New Black I know, apparently I was out of the loop and have been missing out! It's pretty raunchy, but I love the character development and getting to see the story lines/stories for each character. Why does season 3 not come out until June?!?!

I've also been obsessed with re-watching Gilmore girls! I used to love that show when I was younger, and it's so fun being able to go back and re-watch it! I'm on season four now :)


3. Sour gummy... anything!

For some reason, I've been on a sour gummy kick. It started this past summer when I tried some of these Trolli Octopus. Sure they look creepy (kinda like spiders!) but OH MY GOSH THEY TASTE SO GOOD. They're definitely different from the regular sour worms. Trust me if you haven't, you need to try them! I've only been able to find them in certain places, Hobby Lobby being my biggest (and most random) dealer ;)

But seriously. They are addicting and so so good!



4. Red lip and winged eyeliner

I've been inspired by the makeup Taylor wore in her Shake It Off video. While I look nowhere near as gorgeous, I've still been enjoying that makeup look! It's classy and elegant, and surprisingly easy and fast to do.


5. Turning 21!!!

Can I put this on my list? Haha, well I am!
Monday, I turned 21. Yeah, it sucked having such a moments birthday on a Monday, especially since I had to work. Boo being an adult! But I had a great day nonetheless. :D

Someone Else's Kids

I recently had to read Someone Else's Kids by Torey Hayden for my special education class and write a book report. It really touched me and I wanted to share a little excerpt of what I wrote.

"Lori was her first student and arguably the student in which Hayden had the most

connection. She was in first grade and came into her class originally as a resource student. Lori

was struggling with reading, and after some research, Hayden had learned that Lori experienced

a traumatic brain injury from her abusive father, which left her unable to learn and read on her

age-appropriate developmental level. After being put up for adoption, Lori found a new, loving

family that cared for her and her twin sister, who did not receive as bad of injury as Lori. Shortly

after finding her new home, her adoptive mother died of cancer, leaving the family heartbroken.

Through all her struggles as such a young girl, Lori had the happiest spirit. She was caring and

always bubbly. She could always point out the bright side in any situation. After so much

struggle with her regular teacher and reading, Lori was exhausted in the subject of reading.

Knowing mentally that Lori might never read, it left Hayden with a battle inside herself. She felt

conflicted because of the pressure from the teacher and principal to make her read, and still

having to see first hand the emotional stress it was causing Lori.

That afternoon when Lori ran into her classroom, saying “I brung you something!", it

brought a smile to Hayden's face. Looking at the picture Lori handed her, it was a drawing of a

blue bird with black wings and yellow legs. While it was abstract and not perfect, she could still

tell that the bird was happy. Lori exclaimed to Hayden that it was the best picture she had ever

drawn and that she used her favorite crayons. She explained that she stayed inside the lines and

that it was the best thing she had ever done. Lori then explained that it wasn't as good as a

photograph and no matter how hard she tried, it wasn't perfect. After Hayden reassured her that it

was beautiful just the way it was, Lori corrected her. “No, no, that's not what I'm saying. It isn't

right because that wasn't the way I wanted to draw it. It wasn't perfect, like I wanted it to

be...What I was thinking was that it is perfect. Not the part you see but what's inside you. In my

head, I could see this bird perfect...and that's sort of enough for me to like this picture even

though it isn't really very perfect. Because...I know it could be....Things never really are perfect”

She said “But inside you, you can always see them perfect, if you try. That makes things

beautiful to me.” (154-155).

What Lori said is a very important life lesson that everyone needs to hear at some point in

their lives because often, as human beings, we tend to lack the ability to see things from a

different perspective. When I think about becoming a Special Education Teacher, I want to be

reminded of what sweet Lori had said that day. In all aspects of life, things are not perfect. No

matter how hard you can try, sometimes it just doesn't go the way you wanted. It doesn't always

go your way and it doesn't always turn out the way you planned, but there is beauty in that. There

is beauty in this imperfect world and despite all the negativity, the badness, the pain and the

suffering, there is still beauty. There can still be happiness and joy. Life is still beautiful. All you

have to do is look. And as a teacher, it's my job to find it."

The Texas State Fair, Y'all.

So I'm from Dallas. (No, I don't have EBOLA. I figured I'd mention that forefront.) And if you know anything about being from Texas, you'll know that the annual State Fair is like a huge deal. From my memory, I think it might be the biggest fair in the nation? (fact-checkers correct me if I'm wrong.)

We have this creepy dude named Big Tex (who rather ironically, went up in flames a few years ago... it only seemed like a big deal at the time.) Everyone, and I mean everyone,  has to get a picture with him. It's basically a right-of-passage for any Texan child. That and the easter bunny. (Although I'm pretty sure the easter bunny is a little more world-renowned than poor ol' Big Tex.)

 Then of course, there's the fried foods. You know, fried butter, fried sweet tea, fried milk and cookies, fried guacamole and several more variations of the like. Basically anything they can fry, they will. Note: above we are consuming fried cookie dough. It was fantastic...just like a fresh cookie from the oven. Which leads me to a very important philosophical question: why they don't just serve regular old cookies?

But hey.... It's FRIED!

Then there are the rides. What's more fun than risking your life on some poorly maintained ride for about 70 seconds of childish pleasure? Oh, don't get me wrong, I love fair rides just as much as the next girl, but seriously...there's something pretty terrifying yet exciting about risking your life. Especially when the ride operator tells you "Hmmm...good enough!"

Of course there's the ferris wheel. It's true you know, everything really is bigger in Texas. I believe (again fact-checkers correct me) it's one of this biggest in the US. No, we didn't ride it because we refused to pay the $30 fee to only get unbelievably nauseous and terrified of heights. 

By now you're probably thinking "Oh Amber! Please, please tell me what your favorite thing is at the fair." Well lucky you, I'm about to tell you.

The answer is fairly simple:

Cotton Candy. 

(AKA Candy floss to you Brits/Canadians)

Yeah. Enough said. 

So there you have it, folks. That was my wonderfully vague and yet terribly uninteresting lesson on the Texas State Fair, Y'all.

(Sorry, I had to add that. It was completely necessary.)

{A Very Late} Weekend Wrap Up: Quick Trip to Tampa + A Gorgeous Wedding!

 I am perfectly aware that it is currently Friday and I am just now posting about this fantastic past weekend...that's just how I roll these days. 

So, since my mom now lives in Florida and I only have class on tuesdays and thursdays, I was able to come out for the weekend to attend my (2nd) cousin's wedding! (Also because we found a super cheap ticket. 

I packed up Friday afternoon and headed out to the airport. And because it's just just my luck, the plane was delayed by 3 hours so I didn't end up arriving at my Aunt's house until late that night. 

Saturday:

We woke up early (to my college standards) and decided to head out to another Goodwill in the metroplex that we hadn't been to before. It was a really good one and I ended up with a pair of chucks, KED slip ons and a few cute tops. Side note: you should've seen me trying to shove those in my small 'personal item' to carry on the plane. 

When we got back, it was already time to get ready for the wedding!

My mom's cousin (my second cousin) Sara was getting married.

The wedding took place in a gorgeous country club in Tampa and the actual ceremony was in this breathtaking garden with trees canopying the gazebo where they stood. 

 She made such a beautiful bride...I fell in love with her dress!

Then it was time for the best part...the reception!!

While I don't dance (must be a family thing because no one else in our little clan does either!), we still had a blast.

Whew, that's a lot.

The night ended with me being the DD and running through McDonalds for a a late night junk food run.

So many fun memories I'll have from this day!

Sunday:

Sunday morning my mom, Addison, my cousins Jake and Matthew headed out to the beach. Yep. You read that right, it's October and we went to the beach. Gotta love Florida!

Now, I didn't say it wasn't chilly... hehe

We found an alive jellyfish! It was so cool.

We concluded the afternoon eating the best chicken I've ever had at this little shack called Ya-Yas.

The rest of the evening was spent relaxing and spending quality time with the fam...especially this sweet girl that I missed so much.

Monday:

Monday morning after getting all the cousins off to school, Addison, my mom and I got donuts at the one and only Dunkin, then went out to the coolest music store ever...seriously!

The building used to be the most ritzy, fancy restaurant in the 80's that had the prettiest architecture and these glam chandeliers...there's even a fancy garden that houses hundreds of statues.

It went out of business and now the gorgeous building houses a music store. It's kind of sad to see how fancy this place used to be and how different it is now, but I thought seeing all those bad-a** guitars juxtaposed against the chic, vintage decor was kinda neat. 

We spent the rest of the afternoon touring USF Tampa (such a beautiful campus!), eating Chinese with sweet Matthew and packing me up to head back to the big D. 

The end came way too fast (please refrain from a 'That's what she said' joke).

Before I knew it I was back in Dtown. The plane ride was pretty cool because I got to see downtown Dallas and even the State Fair!

I had so much fun spending time with family and visiting the great state of Florida!

Fall Essentials

So, I'm about to go all stereotypical white girl on you and share some of my favorites for fall!

Fall is my absolute favorite time of year. I love the cooler weather, the foods and drinks, the outfits and most importantly, it's my birthday season!

What are some of your fall favorites?

The ABC's of Book Lovers!

I thought I'd do this fun quiz...The ABC's for books!

Author you read the most books from: Probably Nicholas Sparks. I am not a fan of every single novel (The Best Of Me being one I don't really prefer) but I'm pretty sure I've read all his books besides two: The Choice and his most recent one. 

Best Sequel ever: I really loved If You Leave, which was the sequel to If You Stay. I liked the main guy character a lot, and it was just as cheesy and cute as the first one. (Beware, I did NOT like the third book the the series). 

Currently Reading: With school and work right now, I haven't had a chance to pick up another book. But I just finished reading Nash and LOVED it. It was really relatable to my life, so I enjoyed it! (Note: Nash is the fourth book in the Marked Men series)

Drink of choice while reading: I don't really drink anything while reading...to much multitasking. But I love coffee, tea and hot chocolate! 

E-reader or Physical book: Both! For books that I really love, I want a physical copy of, but generally, I look and see which is cheaper (amazon or nook) and then buy based off that! 

Fictional character you would have actually dated in high school:  Surprise, surprise. Augustus Waters. SWOON! He can tell me "okay" any day, any time. 

Glad you gave this book a chance: 50 Shades. I know, I know. But I was curious and read it. Sue me. The first book was not my thing at all and I almost stopped reading it several times...but I kept with it and stuck it out until the end. I don't know why, but when I got to the second book, I enjoyed it more. I was able to get past all that kinky crap and see a pretty cute love story. 

Hidden gem book: When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. I feel like I haven't really heard of anybody talk about this book. It's fantastic. It's one of those where you really only understand it until the very end and when you do, it's like MIND.BLOWN. It's a children's book I believe, so it's a quick and easy read. 

Important moment in your reading life: I was in 5th grade and we were doing book reports. My friend was telling me about the book she had read, which was about a time in the past where people were sent to camps and murdered just because of their religion. I didn't believe her and went to the library to check out the book she had read. I read The Diary of Anne Frank that evening and finished it by the next day. 

Just finished: oops, I already answered this one! It's Nash by Jay Crownover. 

Kinds of books you won't read: I'm not a big information book reader. Like it's torture for me to read my school textbooks. 

Longest book you've read: I honestly have no clue! Oh, maybe The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer. 

Major book hangover because of: The end of TFIOS. Enough said. 

Number of bookcases you own: I technically only have one bookcase, but I store my books all over my room. It's a collection problem. 

One book you've read multiple times: Time Travelers Wife. One of my favorite books and I like to read it during the winter. I don't know if you consider this a book or not...but I also read The Tell Tale Heart every halloween!

Preferred place to read: In bed, in my cozy chair, on the floor, in the library on campus. Riding the bus to school...etc. 

 Basically anywhere I have time.

Reading regret: I sorta regret reading The Divergent Series. I did a whole post on them, but basically I wish I had only read the first one and skipped the other two. 

Series you started and need to finish (all books are out in series): I need to finish the Maddox Brothers Series. I read the sample to Beautiful Wedding and it kinda made me mad, so I didn't buy it. But I wanna finish the series, so I will eventually. 

Three of your all time favorite books: Man, this is difficult.

 I narrowed it down to The Little Prince by Antoine De Saint-Exupery;  The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green;  and 1984 by George Orwell. 

Unapologetic fan-girl for:  If you've read this far, you know...The Fault in Our Stars.  (More like an overall John Green fan. I am a nerdfighter, no doubt about it.)

Very excited for this release more than all the others: I'm excited for Rowdy by Jay Crownover to come out this October but other than that I can't think of any I'm waiting to release. 

Worst bookish habit: When I get curious and/or bored in a book, I skip to the end and read the last page. I hate that I do that because I kicked myself in the foot several times and ruin some serious plot twists for myself. Side note: reason #125 why I love John Green. His first sentence in the back of the book in the authors note is typically along the lines of this : "If you are reading ahead to figure out what happens STOP IT YOU SNEAKY LITTLE SNEAKSTER! Go back to your chapter." 

Yep. He gets me.

2014 Liebster Awards

I cannot believe it's already time for another round of the Liebster awards! I was nominated this year by the sweet Emily from her blog The Country Bluebird!

Here's the questions I got:

1. If you could change your name,what would you change it to?

It's a running joke in my family that everyone, including me, hates my name. (Amber is TOTALLY a stripper name). In fact, my nana only calls me by nickname (typically AC). 

With that being said, I so wish my first name was my middle name, Caroline. I adore the name and even more so because it was my great grandmothers. 

2. What do you do when you need to clear your head?

As stupid as it sounds, I either go window shopping, read a book, or read blogs. Also, showers are great for me to work through things and to clear my head. Call me weird, I know!

3. What book is the most meaningful to you, and why?

This one's a toughie! Well, most recently, The Fault in our Stars. I kinda dislike how popular it's become (although, not shocked...it's really good!) because I just kinda want it to be mine only. I know how crazy that sounds, but that book is seriously a treasure and the idea that there are other people out there who can't see the beauty in it or only like/dislike it because of the movie, makes my chest hurt. I can't say enough great things about it.

4. Where would you go if you could go anywhere in the world?

This one's obvious. France, duh. Actually can I just say Europe in general? I'm dying to see Greece, Spain, Germany and Amsterdam (for reasons unrelated to TFIOS...mainly to see Anne Frank's house. I've had a secret obsession with her since like 2nd grade. Wow, we are way off topic here... ending the parenthesis now). 

5. What about blogging keeps you motivated?

For me, it's a fantastic way to be able to look back on my life and the different stages of life I was in. I love being able to look back on what I was doing/feeling/wearing two years ago, so that motivates me to keep up with it for future reference. I'm totally selfish, I know.

6. Apple or Android? Which do you prefer?

I'm an apple girl. It's what I know and I would be a traitor otherwise since my oldest brother works for Apple. 

7. If you had to choose a favorite musician, who would it be?

Again, if you know me, you'd think my initial answer would be Taylor Swift, which is very true! But more recently, I've been jamming to Ed Sheeran a lot. I love his lyrics and his soulful voice. Right now, the song I'm listening to most by him is this one. So beautiful!

8. Country life or city life?

I'm a city girl by heart, but that doesn't mean I don't like escaping to the country every once in a while. Luckily some of my extended family live in the country so it's nice to visit them, but also reeeeeally nice to get back to the big town. 

9. What book character do you relate to the most?

I just finished a book called Nash and I kept thinking that I was struggling with a lot of the same things the main character, Saint, was dealing with. She had a lot of the same insecurities as I do and it gave me hope that one day I can overcome them!

10. What motivates you to get out of bed and get going?

I wouldn't say that anything necessarily motivates me, but really just a lot of obligations I have require me to actually get out of my bed. Ha! But really, I know that I want good grades, so even though I'm getting up at 6:30 everyday, I know it's worth it. Same on days when I'm working...

money > sleep

Dessert ALL THE WAY. In fact, there are days where I don't even eat dinner, I just skip to dessert. Bad, Amber. Bad.
